10+ Gifts teachers REALLY want to receive

I've been chatting with my friends on this Teacher's Appreciation Day and it's been fascinating to hear which gifts they received from their students that they loved... and which ones weren't so great. As parents we want to make sure our teachers know they are appreciated, but I also like to give a gift that I know they will actually enjoy. Here are 10+ gifts teachers say they REALLY want to receive from their students:

A personal thank you note.
This is the #1 thing all my teacher friends could agree on! A heartfelt thank you note means more to them than any gift, and it's something they'll hold onto for years. One teacher told me when he's having a bad day he'll sit down and go through those old notes to help boost his spirit and remind him why he loves this job!

Gift cards.
Is your Little's teacher a coffee lover? A movie buff? Consider getting them a gift card so they can go pick out their favorite thing at their favorite store. When in doubt, a Target and Amazon gift cards are always a safe bet!

Fresh meals.
Consider gift cards for the healthier side of fast lunch options like Panera, Chipotle or a local salad bar where they can run and get a fresh meal on their break (or an easy dinner after a long day away!)

Healthy snacks.
For the health conscious teacher, a fruit basket is something he/she can enjoy and share with friends without the guilt. My friends also love receiving expensive snacks that feel like a splurge, things like nuts and healthy protein bars that help them get through a long day with few short breaks.

A stiff drink.
I say that with a laugh but many teachers love to receive a good bottle of wine to enjoy at the end of a long hard school day! If you know their taste, perhaps give a small bottle of something a little stronger.

School supplies.
So many teachers fund their classroom supplies out of their own pockets. Many parents generously help fulfill a supply wish list at the beginning of the year, but those supplies get used up. Ask him/her what she wants, needs replenished throughout the year and stock up the class!

A gift from the whole class.
If you can organize all the parents, getting one really nice big gift will likely mean a lot more than many small gifts. Is she a gardener? Get a fruit tree for her backyard. Is he a baseball fan? Get him a pair of tickets to see his favorite team.

Sanitizer.
I saw this as a joke on Pinterest but it's actually pretty great! We all know that schools are germ factories and we should care about attempting to keep our teachers as healthy as our kids. Consider splurging on the nice hand sanitizer with a great scent from Bath & Body Works. You can get several small ones they can throw in drawers, or a big bottle to sit on the teacher's desk or by the door! Or consider getting a bottle of disinfectant spray and a tub of sanitizing wipes for the classroom.

Something for the summer.
Just like your kids are looking forward to summer, their teachers are heading into break too. Help them celebrate that break away from lesson plans and grading papers by getting them a good book to read for pleasure. Perhaps make a summer kit with sunscreen and tropical iced tea and other theme ideas that will be used up in the sun!

Flowers.
I always love having fresh flowers on my desk so I'm sure a teacher would too. Don't want to get something that will only last a week? Consider getting a small flowering plant or succulent that is low maintenance and easy to enjoy for weeks or months or years to come!

Things to avoid giving a teacher:

Mugs.
This one broke my heart, as I love a hearty coffee mug with a great design... but teachers say they have too many!

Cheap candy.
Remember Halloween as a kid when you were really disappointed with that one house on your street that always gave out the cheap bad candy? Don't do that to your Little's teacher! Spring for the good stuff.

Clothes.
It would be so fun to get a personalized teacher shirt, especially with all the great designs out there and the fun options you can personalize on Etsy, but this can go very, very wrong... especially with women as you should never try to guess her size. Too small and she can't wear it, too big and you just called her fat... Ouch.
